Board approves exception to allow Trail Elementary fifth‑grade trips to Glendo Reservoir

The board considered and approved an exception to District policy 5147 to allow fifth‑grade students from Trail Elementary to travel to Glendo Reservoir on Thursday, May 16 and Tuesday, May 21, dates that exceed the district’s recommended travel times.

A teacher addressed by the board as Mr Bowers (also transcribed in places as Mr Boward) described the trip as an opportunity to introduce students to outdoor skills and local natural‑resource partners. He said the district is connected with the Game and Fish Department and with fisheries biologists, and that one nonprofit provides a donated fishing pole to each participating student. "Seventy‑five kids are going to get a fishing pole," he said, adding that last year the group caught 14 fish during the outing.

Board members expressed support for the experiential learning value of the trip and then voted to approve the requested exception by voice vote.
