The McCall City Council voted May 14 to adopt the compressed four-day (4x10) workweek as the city's standard schedule following a six-month pilot that began in December.
Forrest (staff) and Tracy Melvitch, the city's HR manager, presented pilot results that included a staff satisfaction score of 4.66 out of 5 from an internal survey, an adjusted 9% decrease in sick-leave-related absenteeism, and a roughly 58% reduction in overtime costs compared with the prior year (staff noted the winter had been light on snow, which affects overtime for snow removal). Public access hours were maintained, and staff emphasized the need for minor personnel policy amendments (holidays and leave accrual rates) to support the schedule permanently.
Council members praised the data and the customer service guide included in the packet. One council member said the compressed schedule appeared to increase staff productivity and work-life balance. The council moved to approve long-term implementation and directed staff to return with necessary personnel policy changes.
What happens next: HR will draft and bring forward any required amendments to the personnel policy (holidays, leave accruals and housekeeping updates) for council approval.
