An agency official for Salem-Keizer SD 24J said the district's safety systems “worked” after South Salem High School went into a significant lockdown tied to a public incident at Bush Pasture Park.
The official said the schools that were potentially affected were put into threat conditions and were released once conditions improved, adding that district staff immediately partnered with law enforcement to share information and monitor the situation. “Our safety systems worked yesterday; they did exactly what they are designed to do,” the official said.
The district said it received a small number of threats the following morning and investigators, working with law enforcement, began looking into each report. The official said those initial threats were reshared on social media at an exponential rate, which heightened community unease and, at times, panic.
The message gave three clear requests to the community: that students and families report anything they see to local law enforcement, school officials or the SafeOregon tip line; that people not share unverified information on social media because doing so makes a difficult situation worse; and that every form of threat—whether a joke, hoax or an explicit allegation—will be treated seriously. “There is no form of acceptable participation in anything related to school threats,” the official said.
The official apologized for the stress caused by the week’s events, said the district will continue to learn more in the coming days and weeks, and thanked students, families, staff and Salem PD for their roles in responding. “This is how we come together as a community,” the official said.
