Board hires SCSBA for superintendent search and names Dr. Bethany Gals interim superintendent

Following an executive session, the Georgetown County School Board authorized a contract with the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) to conduct the district’s superintendent search and appointed Dr. Bethany Gals as interim superintendent effective July 1, 2024.

Scott Price, executive director of SCSBA, presented the association’s typical search timeline (about three to six months), recruitment practices, confidentiality procedures and a base fee he described as competitive ($115,000 plus potential administrative costs). He introduced Judy Legrand as SCSBA’s search coordinator and Dr. Daryl Johnson as a consulting retired superintendent assigned to the search team.

The board voted to execute the SCSBA contract as presented. The board then moved to appoint Dr. Bethany Gals as interim superintendent effective July 1, 2024; the appointment includes a monthly salary supplement of $3,400 and a monthly automobile allowance of $850. Chair Gaskins said the board will work with SCSBA on recruitment, stakeholder engagement and the search timeline, and staff will return with scheduling and next steps.
