Representative Delana Johnson and Andy Evans, staff, presented HB 202 to name the giant cabbage Alaska's official state vegetable.
Andy Evans described a short sectional analysis: section 1 would add AS 44.09.055 to establish the giant cabbage as the state vegetable and section 2 sets an immediate effective date under AS 1.10.070(c). Evans said the CS corrected an incorrect scientific designation in the original bill and offered historical context about vegetable cultivation and Palmer's role in Alaska agriculture. He noted Alaska produces agricultural products across some 1,100 farms and that a 2012 Palmer-grown cabbage holds the Guinness world record at about 138.25 pounds.
With no public testimony and no objections to a motion by Senator Tilton, the committee reported the CS for HB 202 (work draft 34-LS-0753/N) out of committee with individual recommendations and the attached fiscal notes.
