Committee adds intent that transit division restore limited Saturday bus service

The finance committee approved an amendment to the transit section of the transportation budget directing the transit division to restore a limited Saturday bus schedule within existing appropriations by modifying or reallocating underperforming routes.

Assemblymember Matthew Kress said restoring Saturday service would benefit riders who need weekend transportation for errands or work. Administration officials said their plan is to resume the limited Saturday service that existed before the COVID-19 pandemic by identifying underperforming routes and reallocating drivers and resources rather than adding new operating funds.

The amendment passed by roll call and the transit section of the budget passed as amended; the committee noted the administration will evaluate which routes to reduce to free resources for Saturdays and that rider demand data will inform the final service plan.
