The San Angelo Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) board voted to add $25,000 to the previously approved grant for the 5 West Concho ‘‘Angry Cactus’’ project, bringing the total award to $100,000.
Hannah Morell of Development Services told the board the applicant originally requested $75,000 and is now asking for an additional $25,000 so "their project cost [would] a 100,000," including new sidewalk demolition and repair tied to the storefront improvements. She said the work matches the façade, door and awning renovations already approved and would make the frontage continuous with nearby streetscape work.
Local resident and commenter Lee Fluger told the board the sidewalk in front of the property is in poor condition and urged that repair be included with the façade work so the two projects proceed together. "Basically what this funding will do will incorporate the renovation and revitalization of the sidewalk," Fluger said.
Following brief discussion the board moved and approved the additional funding by voice vote. Chair called for the ayes and the motion passed. Staff said the board’s approval will move forward for City Council consideration.
The board’s action is ministerial funding for a private redevelopment project; no changes to program policy were enacted as part of this approval. The applicant is expected to proceed with design and permitting, and staff indicated any required contract signatures or encumbrances will follow normal administrative steps.
