District staff presented a progress update on the Weibo school‑based health clinic and told trustees the project is at Stage 4 (final design review) and is scheduled to submit drawings to the city for approval. Dr. Marcus Jackson said construction would probably begin in late June or July if the city approves plans and weather cooperates.
According to Jackson, the project received an increase in grant funding (the presenter referenced a roughly $203,000 increase), but a planned dental suite was removed from the district’s internal budgeted floor plan after architects estimated an additional cost of about $753,000 to nearly $1,000,000 for that component. Jackson said the district will partner with local dentists so students can still access dental services even though the dental clinic space was removed from the current build.
Services planned at the Weibo clinic include routine medical care, immunizations and mental‑health supports for students, staff and parents; the specialist staffing model presented included a nurse practitioner, an LVN, front‑desk support and billing staff, with security provided by the city during clinic hours, the presenter said. Jackson said the clinic will be located at the Kern Child Nutrition Center adjacent to GWC (the presenter referenced the building address as “1105” in the meeting).
Trustees asked whether volunteers and students could participate; Jackson said Foremost (the grant partner) will manage volunteer oversight and that some health‑pathway students may be able to earn hours or internships at the clinic. Trustees also asked which hospital the clinic would contact for emergency transfers; staff said they would confirm the hospital partner and provide that information to the board before the meeting adjourned.
The board thanked staff for the presentation and expressed support for moving the project through permitting and construction.
