Committee approves van transport and overnight travel for students to Comfort Zone Camp

The school committee approved the administration’s request March 10 to transport up to 10 students to Comfort Zone Camp, a three-day, two-night grief-support program run externally that the district has referred students to in the past. Sarah, the district social worker, explained the camp is free and provides mentoring, coping groups and family supports for youth who have experienced significant loss.

The administration asked for approval to use a district van and driver to transport students from the district to Sandwich; the committee approved the motion by voice vote. Administrators said referred families would provide parental permission and that staff would coordinate logistics; currently three families have indicated interest and staff expect more referrals.

The committee also approved three scholarships for the Class of 2022 earlier in the meeting, totaling $2,000 across three recipients. Scholarships include a $1,000 award from the Church of Saint Paul thrift store and two $500 Frederick J. Stone memorial awards.
