Committee debates who qualifies for championship jackets as tournaments change

The Blackstone‑Millville Regional School Committee spent a lengthy portion of its Oct. 28 meeting debating revisions to its championship jacket policy after statewide tournament formats replaced traditional "districts." Committee members and athletics staff said the policy needs clearer, sport‑specific language so the committee can consistently recognize teams and individuals.

Tammy Lemieux, who presented the subcommittee's draft, said the existing language refers to "districts," a term that has been superseded in some sports by statewide tournaments or new Central Mass tournament structures. Staff replied that some sports (for example, football) now use a statewide, division-based playoff while other sports retain central‑mass tournaments, so a one‑size‑fits‑all phrasing is inaccurate.

Committee members pressed several turning points: whether jackets should be awarded when a team wins a central‑mass association tournament or only when it wins a state title; whether individual qualifiers (cross‑country, track, swimming) should receive jackets; and how to treat students who win championships as part of a co‑op team that represents another school. Members repeatedly recommended spelling out, by sport and level, which outcomes qualify for a jacket rather than using the umbrella term "district."

Staff (identified in the meeting as Robert) said the subcommittee can add a referenced list—kept outside the policy and updated annually—to avoid repeatedly amending the policy itself. The committee also discussed practical decisions such as whether jackets should carry a patch noting the level (e.g., state champion) and whether co‑op athletes would receive the BMR jacket or a partner‑school jacket; the committee asked staff to survey local co‑op agreements and report back.

No formal vote was taken on the revised jacket policy; members directed the policy subcommittee and athletic directors to produce a clarified, sport‑by‑sport implementation matrix and to return with language addressing co‑op athletes, ordering logistics, and funding responsibilities.
