Residents urge county to add regulation‑size indoor pickleball courts

Peggy Green and Mary Allen told Beaver County commissioners at a May 6 work session that the county's indoor courts are not marked to regulation pickleball size and urged the county to add more pickleball lines or convert courts to increase daytime capacity.

"The pickleball courts are not regulation size. They are 2 ft too wide," Peggy Green said, and she and Mary Allen said the current indoor set‑up places two pickleball courts on one tennis court. They described a consistent midday group of about 32 regular players who use the two indoor courts and said national and local interest in pickleball has surged (the speakers cited a 50% growth in 2024).

Tony Cantu and recreation staff responded that resurfacing and re‑striping will be considered during the next full resurfacing cycle; staff said a prior budgetary estimate from an external vendor put full resurfacing at about $60,000 and that adding paint lines previously cost roughly $2,000 when two courts were converted. Staff offered to provide year‑over‑year usage reports showing tennis and pickleball hours to help the commissioners evaluate options.

Residents also raised maintenance concerns, including a damaged net that staff said had been donated and for which replacement had been ordered. Commissioners asked staff to analyze usage data, provide cost options for re‑marking or adding courts, and follow up with the requesters about timelines and feasibility; no formal vote was taken.
