DeBary briefing: high person-crime clearance rates, property-theft investigations continue

Captain Israel, District 6 Commander, told the City of DeBary briefing that the sheriff's office is seeing strong investigative outcomes so far this year, with a 95.12% clearance rate for person crimes and an overall Group A clearance rate of 83.16% for January through April. He contrasted those results with national averages cited in the briefing (person crimes 43.8%, property crimes 15.9%).

The commander said traffic enforcement increased sharply in April and remains a priority. "We had a total of 1,917 traffic stops. Out of that, 1,212 were from DeBary," he said, and reported 32 citations issued during the four-month period. City leaders flagged e-bikes as a recurring enforcement challenge and said they are coordinating with neighboring municipalities on consistent ordinances.

Sergeant Brian Walsh described several cleared person-crime investigations and explained one aggravated-assault case was closed "exceptional" after investigators identified a suspect but the victim declined to pursue charges. "Oddly enough, our victim was unable to identify him in a photo lineup," Walsh said, describing subsequent search warrants and investigative steps that led detectives to pause further prosecution.

On property crimes, officials outlined several burglaries and thefts under investigation: an attempted e-bike theft at 840 Lancaster Avenue (prints collected, no suspect identified), a detached-garage burglary at 131 Integra Reserve (AR-15 and a case reported stolen, no serial numbers found), and a break-in at 2011 West Gardinia Avenue discovered after deputies recovered a nearby cell phone. At 28 Madiraa Road deputies made a prompt show-up identification that led to an arrest.

Deputies also detailed multiple retail-theft incidents. Video and facial-recognition tools helped identify a repeat suspect linked to shoplifting at multiple stores statewide; sheriff's office personnel said they coordinated warrants with other counties. A credit-card theft at a Burger King on Sunrise Boulevard was solved after license-plate reader hits traced a rental car back to a suspect.

The briefing stressed that many cases were turned over to the investigative services section (ISS) or assigned to specific detectives, and that some investigations have limited leads because of missing serial numbers or lack of surveillance footage.

Looking ahead, Captain Israel said the department will continue traffic enforcement and pursue ordinance changes to address e-bike hazards, while investigators follow up on property-crime leads.
