The Franklin City Council voted May 11 to accept $16,000 to underwrite a series of combined Juneteenth and Martin Luther King Day events coordinated by local organizers. City staff explained the funds are being provided as event sponsorship and will be routed through a 501(c)(3) to manage procurement and disbursement rather than given as an unrestricted donation to a nonprofit.
Council members reviewed the budget breakdown included in the meeting packet: roughly $3,000 for advertising, $8,000 for live entertainment, $2,500 for sound and lighting, $1,500 for the MLK event component, and $1,000 for printed materials. Council discussed competing requests from other local nonprofits and emphasized that the city’s role is to sponsor and help produce the programming rather than transfer general operating money to a single agency.
Following questions about accountability and whether the city should instead divide funds among several organizations, the motion to approve the sponsorship passed.
