During public comment at the May 13 Grayslake CCSD 46 board meeting, resident Coy Flores criticized the district's decision not to publicly present a preliminary budget at the meeting, noting the board had presented preliminary budgets in May of 2022'25.
Flores said the district's reserves are at historic lows and that staff reductions and reassignments have already been made; she argued that if the district had sufficient information to make staffing decisions, it should also have presented an early look at the preliminary budget to the public for transparency and meaningful input.
Mr. Goldstein (district staff) explained he requested additional time to review expenditures, staffing and budget assumptions before a public presentation. The board recorded the comment and did not respond from the dais during public comment; board members said they would share more information when the preliminary budget is presented at a future meeting.
The public comment serves as a formal request from a community member that the board restore or explain its prior practice of presenting a preliminary budget in May when fiscal circumstances are uncertain.
