Peninsula Clean Energy to appear as 'West Light Energy' on bills; council asked to approve JPA amendment

San Carlos — Officials from Peninsula Clean Energy told the City Council on May 11 that the community‑owned electricity provider will begin appearing as "West Light Energy" on customer bills and documents after a board decision to adopt a new name.

Mark Hirschman, director of government affairs for Peninsula Clean Energy, told councilmembers the change addresses name recognition issues (PCE was often shortened to PCE and confused with PG&E) and reflects the agency’s expanded membership beyond the original peninsula jurisdictions. He said the organization will ask member councils to approve a small administrative amendment to the joint powers agreement that only replaces the agency’s name in the agreement.

The ask and next steps: The board’s requested amendment is an administrative action included on San Carlos’ consent calendar. Hirschman asked San Carlos staff to help with shared communications to remind customers that the change affects only the label on bills; rates, programs and staff remain the same.

Reaction: Council members expressed general support and noted Peninsula Clean Energy’s local investments (EV chargers, rooftop solar at civic sites) and bill savings cited by the presenter.
