Lancaster County mounted response unit showcases training, recounts search that helped find a missing person alive

Lancaster County's Mounted Response Unit (MRU) and the county coroner presented training results and a recent real-world deployment to council, highlighting volunteer-driven preparedness and interagency cooperation.

Coroner Carla described an April 25 training that paired MRU volunteers and EMS, including activities for junior MRU participants and hands-on medical instruction. The unit covers large swaths of terrain by horseback and conducts realistic mock missions; Carla said the teams practiced search techniques and medical triage with volunteer medics embedded in the unit.

MRU members recounted that 11 days after the training they were summoned to a real search at 3:40 a.m.; the unit covered difficult terrain and, with EMS support, located a missing person alive. Presenters emphasized that the MRU is volunteer-run and not funded by tax dollars; volunteers absorb most costs and said they are available to assist other agencies across the county.

Council thanked the MRU and EMS participants. The presentation underscored the potential value of continued cross-agency exercises to improve response times and reach in terrain inaccessible by vehicles.
