Committee reviews sculptor showcase rubric and hears staff updates on public art map and Hello Lamp Post pilot

Committee members reviewed the scoring criteria for the 2026–2028 sculptor showcase and debated whether to make the rubric more stringent or focus on broader outreach to attract new applicants across Iowa.

Staff recapped that submissions will be evaluated on artistic merit, creativity, public safety, location appropriateness and outdoor durability. Members suggested targeted outreach to college art faculties, the Iowa Arts Council and media outlets across the state to diversify applicants; staff said the deadline is May 18 and that there were four to five submissions at the time of the meeting.

Staff also reported that the public art archive map is now live on the city site with filtering options and that the communications team will consider embedding the tool after a website redesign in the fall. Committee members discussed opportunities to work with the University of Iowa collection and named campus contacts they or staff should notify; staff said some university pieces are stewarded under different campus offices.

On the Hello Lamp Post digital pilot, staff described using the Irving Weber sculpture as an entry point to curated content, told the committee they had connected with at least one descendant for additional material, and said a launch and test conversation are expected at the end of May with monitoring through the summer to analyze engagement.
