Superintendent Dr. Fields used the May 12 board meeting to outline the district’s '3rd Floor Forward' initiative and preview summer learning opportunities intended to support students through upcoming grade‑configuration changes.
Dr. Fields described three strategic priorities: "create a new future together," "expand community partnerships with intentionality," and "maximize every resource for learning." He said a final advisory group meeting is scheduled Thursday, May 21, to discuss Proposition S and the 2027 school‑year restructuring and emphasized research‑based transition supports through the Washington University Institute for School Partnership.
On transition planning, Dr. Fields said the research shows "support for transition starts now" and noted disruption can begin at the announcement stage. He urged co‑creating new school identities, engaging families in neighborhoods, supporting principals through peer learning, pausing nonessential initiatives, and providing "individualized transition planning for students with IEPs."
District CNI representative Shamika Green presented specific summer offerings. She said the district will host a one‑day summer learning extravaganza on June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Administration Center campus and listed several targeted programs: a coding and robotics opportunity for grades 3–5 (50 spots total; 25 still available), Earn A Bike with STL Bike Works (class full, waitlist), an ACT‑prep program for 30 rising juniors and seniors, a dual‑enrollment early college seminar with 75 spots, credit recovery options, fine‑arts summer music camp (120 spots), and ESY locations at McCluer North High School and Berkeley Intermediate School.
Dr. Fields said the district is partnering with community organizations including City SC for PE programming and Washington University’s Institute for School Partnership for independent research and policy analysis. He framed the summer offerings as part of a broader effort to maintain learning continuity and to prepare students for the 2027 transitions.
Next steps: advisory meeting May 21; the district will present additional operational briefs and implementation details at upcoming board meetings.
