Business owner urges BID and city to address vacancies and ‘‘gateway’’ blight south of Walnut; officials cite safety demolitions and donor-funded enhancements

During the public-comment period, Dana Kint identified herself as owner of Riverside Brewery and Restaurant and urged the BID and city to address a string of vacant lots and demolition scars south of Walnut that she said make the southern gateway into downtown look "not very pretty right now." Kint said prior downtown renovation benefits had not reached that area and described missing planters and unmaintained properties that she said harm nearby functioning businesses.

An alderman and the community development director responded: two northern buildings had been declared structurally unsafe and removed under city orders after long-standing safety concerns; a separate demolition was undertaken at the property owner’s discretion. The community development director said the original planters and some streetscape enhancements were privately donated and sited by donors, not installed as part of the city’s reconstruction drawings, and that donor interest in future south-of-Walnut enhancements had not yet been solicited. Staff said there is some local interest in redevelopment south of Walnut but no current proposals before community development.

Kint’s central request — that the BID and city extend visible streetscape improvements to the gateway south of Walnut — drew acknowledgement from board members and an offer from elected officials to meet with her after the meeting to explore next steps.

Ending: Staff and an alderman offered to follow up with Kint and to explore donor and city pathways to improve the gateway; no new formal action or funding commitment was made during the meeting.
