The Pocatello School District 25 board opened its meeting with awards recognizing student and staff achievements.
Courtney, the communications presenter, introduced the district’s Cake (Learner of the Month) awards and the March recipients: Pre‑K learner Miss RZ (nominated by Mrs Proctor) and secondary recipient Mason Dalton (nominated by multiple teachers); Mason’s nominating letters cited his perseverance and positive leadership following family hardships. The board also honored Darcy Hail, assistant principal at Franklin Middle School, as Employee of the Month and announced seven district seniors named semifinalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship program, including two attendees identified as Josh and Evelyn Britain.
During public comment, substitute teacher Paul Inen urged the board to consider the balance and completeness of classroom current‑events sources. He told trustees that some teachers rely on packaged segments such as CNN 10 and said that while it is "packaged beautifully," it is "sometimes incomplete" and "doesn't give the full context"; he added that many conservative sites are blocked on school computers, limiting access to alternative sources.
Student representatives from Century, Highland and Pocatello summarized recent academic and extracurricular successes, including HOSA placements, debate and athletic championships, signings to Idaho State University and community fundraisers for Make‑A‑Wish recipients.
The board thanked award winners and volunteers and adjourned the awards portion of the meeting to proceed with routine business.
