The Utah Transportation Commission approved a series of project funding and scope actions during its March meeting, including consent agenda items, multiple scope/funding additions for state highway and local projects, and the department’s recommended updates to the High Priority Transportation Corridors resolution.
Key approvals included:
- Consent agenda (minutes and staff updates) — approved by voice vote.
- Case Creek Trail pedestrian overpass (Layton) — approved funding addition to support a pedestrian bridge over railroad tracks connecting the trail to the FrontRunner station.
- Enhanced freeway striping Phase 2 — approved adding scope to extend enhanced durable striping north to the airport to improve wet/night visibility.
- SR‑224 Bus Rapid Transit (Park City) — approved an expanded scope and funding package, with a condition that the P3 parking agreement be fully executed by High Valley Transit, Summit County and the private partner before state funds are released (see separate article for full debate).
- Multiple I‑15 passing lane and widening projects — approved scope and funding additions across southern Utah corridors including passing lane segments and bridge replacements near St. George.
- Zion Canyon Fiber Optic Phase 2 (US‑89/SR‑20) — added a new ARPA‑funded project to install roughly 130 miles of fiber optic cable to improve network resiliency and emergency communications along US‑89 and SR‑20.
- High Priority Transportation Corridors resolution (2026‑01) — accepted proposed additions and removals to the state’s high priority corridor list to reflect constructed or programmed corridors and new regional preservation needs.
Commissioners heard informational briefings on project delivery performance (UDOT advertising and contracting metrics) and the department’s Zero Fatalities strategic dashboard. The commission directed staff to report on required actions and to confirm execution of third‑party agreements before disbursing funds for projects that depend on private or local commitments.
Next meeting: May 14–15, 2026.
