Commission approves three ‘Global Village’ murals in downtown Inglewood

The Inglewood Planning Commission unanimously approved design review for three public murals proposed by Inglewood Open Studios as part of the Global Village initiative tied to the Englewood Transit Connector.

Planner Shawn May described the three concepts proposed for walls near the Manchester/Market Street intersection (132 South Market, 2011 South Market and 139 South Market). The murals — titled concepts such as ‘‘Heartbeat of Market Street,’’ ‘‘Communal Time,’’ and ‘‘The Road That Raised Us’’ — depict local history, landmarks and community life and are intended to add color and identity as the city prepares to host major events including the FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.

Artists and organizers said they will coordinate imagery across the three walls so landmarks and themes relate to each other and will continue to refine details in the coming weeks. Artist Michael Rangel called the projects ‘‘a chance to tell the story of Inglewood’’ and said the murals will be visible to passersby and function as photo backdrops. Organizer Tracy Adawume said the program includes apprenticeship opportunities so local emerging artists can gain experience working with lead muralists.

Commissioners praised the concepts and voted to affirm categorical exemptions and adopt design review resolutions DR26‑000016, DR26‑000017 and DR26‑000018. The artists invited commissioners to a May 27 preview of work in progress; appeal rights were noted (10 days).
