Commissioners on March 10 recognized Lewis County Special Olympics athletes and accepted a donation raised by the Polar Plunge planning committee.
Sarah Suns, developmental disabilities coordinator for public health and social services, thanked organizers and volunteers, saying the event "combines courage, fun, and generosity to support an amazing cause" and that proceeds help ensure "athletes have opportunities to compete, grow, and be celebrated through sports." Suns asked planning committee members to stand and invited athletes forward for a photo with the check. The transcript records the check amount as "$11,97"; the numerical amount is incomplete in the record.
A planning committee member identified as Matt described the group as including "fire departments, schools, private citizens, [and] state patrol" and said the committee also organizes a law-enforcement torch run planned for around June. He recognized winter-season athletes, noting the Lewis County Vipers basketball team finished second at the state tournament.
Commissioners permitted the athletes and supporters to come forward for photographs and thanked organizers for the event. The guests were excused after the photo opportunity.
The recognition was ceremonial; no formal action was required. The commission later continued routine business, including several resolutions and a hearing on a pipeline franchise.
