The California State Senate on Thursday adopted a series of largely noncontroversial resolutions recognizing tourism, public-safety mental health, developmental-services anniversaries and an international day against anti‑LGBTQ violence.
Senate Concurrent Resolution 163, presented by Senator Ochoa Bogue, designated May as California Tourism Month and highlighted Visit California’s role and the sector’s economic contributions; the chamber adopted the measure by unanimous roll call. Senator Grayson presented SCR 170, declaring May 25–29 as Firefighter Mental Health Awareness Week and citing research that “1 in 5 firefighters will experience a post‑traumatic stress injury” and that firefighters face higher rates of suicide attempts than the general public. Multiple senators spoke in support of SCR 170, praising firefighters’ service and urging destigmatization of behavioral-health struggles; the resolution passed by unanimous roll call.
SCR 174, presented by Senator Wiener on behalf of Senator Perez, recognized the sixtieth anniversary of California’s two pilot regional centers (Frank D. Lanterman and Golden Gate Regional Centers) and recounted the Lanterman model’s evolution into a statewide system now serving hundreds of thousands of Californians; the resolution was adopted by unanimous consent.
On the floor, Senator Padilla introduced SR 111 to observe the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (May 17). Padilla and others warned of rising anti‑LGBTQ hate incidents and urged solidarity; the Senate adopted SR 111 following a roll call.
The chamber also used today’s privileges of the floor to host guests and recognitions, including a visiting delegation from Catalonia and Tennessee Representative Justin Jones, whom members welcomed and commended for his activism.
Each of the resolutions was approved without amendments and will be recorded in the Senate Journal.
