The Coffee County Commission recognized VFW Post 10904 for its annual Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests and for Teacher of the Year nominations. Commander Kimberly King explained the programs and introduced students and teachers who won post, district and state honors and who have advanced to national consideration.
Students who spoke to the commission included Kenneth Buchanan (second place, Patriot's Pen), Ross Slaughter (state-level winner advancing toward nationals), Lexi Newman (third place Patriot's Pen), Riley Willie (second place), and Jada Cogginshager (third place). Teacher Robin Walker of East Coffee in Deerfield, who teaches English as a second language, was introduced as an elementary Teacher of the Year winner at the post level and advanced through district and state recognition.
Commissioners also noted that Jennifer Simmons of the county rescue squad received the adult Volunteer Stars award for Coffee County at the statewide event. The county's VFW post was recognized in the eastern division as a nonprofit honoree. Commissioners and the public gave applause and standing recognition to the winners.
The recognitions were approved by the commission as part of consent/recognition items (motion by Commissioner Harshman; seconded by Commissioner Watkins).
