At the March 10 committee meeting, VFW representatives announced a Run to Remember 5K scheduled for May 23 at North Central Park to raise funds for the local post and connect veterans to services. A registration QR code is live and organizers said the race will start at 8 a.m.
VFW speakers also urged the committee to help pursue federal grant funds and coordinate with the city manager to identify a building that could host a one‑stop veterans center. They suggested two candidate properties: a historic structure near Grant and Sartosa (noted to have a dirt floor and structural issues) and unused space at a civic plaza that formerly housed city planning and library offices.
Organizers described the envisioned center as a space where Vet Center staff, Survivors Outreach Specialists, Texas Military Department representatives and other veteran organizations could offer services on coordinated days, reducing travel burdens for veterans who otherwise must visit multiple offices across the city.
Committee members agreed to coordinate meetings with the city manager and to continue exploring building feasibility; a congressman was said to have offered earmark support but city cooperation will be required before federal funds can be sought or applied.
