Blackhawk students perform composer-crafted piece through 'Singing a Story' partnership

At the May 7 work session the Blackhawk School Board heard from high school jazz students and staff about a collaboration with the nonprofit Singing a Story and composer-arranger Mike Tamaro. Administrators said the program gives children an opportunity to write and illustrate stories that are turned into songs by professional musicians; the band performed a student-inspired piece at a recent concert.

District staff and students described the experience as a meaningful educational moment that supported students across grade levels and particularly benefited learners with special needs. The board thanked the students and staff for bringing the project to the community and acknowledged the district’s continued investment in arts and music programming.

Next steps: The board encouraged community members who missed the program to watch the recorded performance and invited families to district celebrations at the May 14 meeting.
