At its May 7 meeting the La Mesa‑Spring Valley School Board honored district staff with employee awards and a national recognition.
A video and presentation introduced Amy Simons, identified in the record as a kindergarten teacher at La Presa Elementary, as the district’s certificated employee of the year. Principal Eddie iqi praised her classroom work and family engagement; Amy received congratulations and posed for photos with family and staff.
The meeting then recognized Chuck Hicks, named the district’s classified employee of the year. A video described his student engagement program “Chuck bucks,” and district speakers thanked him for his service and consistent positivity.
Board members and guests also acknowledged John Sullivan, who received a CSEA Reach Award at the national level. Deputy Secretary Cindy Martin recorded congratulatory remarks on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education; John Sullivan spoke briefly about the importance of mental health and "remember[ing] your why" as an educator.
The recognitions were followed by photographs and brief community announcements before the meeting resumed regular agenda business.
