Abby Harry of Decatur County community corrections told commissioners April 20 that state-level grant funding that supports probation and community corrections salaries is under pressure and that county-level planning aims to sustain services.
Harry said the office submitted three requests: $58,473 for a specialty probation officer salary funded through the Indiana Department of Corrections, a $502,816 community corrections request intended to fund countywide salaries and operations, and a $127,865 wellness-court (drug court) request to the Indiana Office of Court Services. "We've been told to expect a 20 to 25% cut this year," she said, and added the county has been planning for reduced funding by trimming positions and seeking local grants to cover drug testing and monitoring costs.
Commissioners praised the department's work and discussed the reporting the county council requested to justify contracted payments. The board accepted the grant requests and thanked staff for contingency planning while noting that county budget decisions may be needed if state cuts are confirmed.
Separately, the board adopted Resolution 2026-9 to approve the county hazard mitigation plan. The clerk read the resolution number and a commissioner moved for adoption; the motion carried by voice vote. Commissioners also commended work on a fairgrounds safety plan during the same discussion.
The county will monitor DOC and IOCS funding decisions and return with budget recommendations if state awards are reduced.
