The Middletown Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Joseph McCarey as superintendent of Middletown Public Schools, effective July 6, 2026, and approved his employment contract for the 20262029 term.
Board members moved into executive session to discuss the hiring and then returned to the public meeting to take the appointment and contract votes. The roll-call affirmation and subsequent contract approval were carried by the board.
"I'm honored to be the next superintendent for the town of Middletown," Dr. McCarey said after the vote. He told the board he will shadow Dr. Adly during a transition period, will take personal days to visit the district before his start date, and pledged to "do what's best for kids" by pursuing a whole-child approach addressing academic, social and emotional needs, raising expectations, and integrating family and community supports.
Board members welcomed McCarey and thanked interim leadership. The board noted it will work with outgoing caretaker Dr. Adly to ensure a smooth transition.
The appointment follows the board's earlier executive-session deliberations on the superintendent search and precedes the district's spring leadership planning and summer onboarding work.
