Commissioners authorize application for 2027 Community Corrections grant, seek prior funding level

Greene County Commissioners authorized staff to submit the 2027 Community Corrections grant application to the Indiana Department of Corrections and supported requesting $680,923 — the presenter’s requested amount to restore roughly $60,000 cut from the county’s 2026 award.

The presenter told commissioners that Greene County’s prior awards had been about $680,293 in recent years, and said the Department of Corrections reduced the state’s Community Corrections budget by roughly $7 million, which contributed to the local reduction last year. The presenter said they would ask for the prior funding level in the 2027 application, acknowledging the county may again face a reduced award.

Why it matters: Community Corrections grant funding supports local programs and staffing that supervise and rehabilitate people on court‑ordered community supervision. A reduction in state funding can reduce local program capacity unless supplemented by local dollars.

A commissioner moved to authorize submission of the 2027 grant application and to request the higher amount; the motion passed by voice vote with no recorded objections. Commissioners urged staff to request the full previous award amount because “if we don’t ask, we won’t get it,” as one commissioner put it.
