During matters from the board the Planning Commission discussed the timeline for upcoming zoning‑code work and related public hearings. Staff said a recent Supreme Court decision referenced in the meeting will affect the approach to the code update, that a public hearing is scheduled for April 29, and that a 5 p.m. April 16 work session with materials provided in advance is possible. Staff cautioned timelines are tight as the team prepares materials.
Commissioners debated whether to add a standing Lakeshore Protection Committee report to the regular agenda. Several members said most lakeshore permit work typically goes directly to the city council and that the planning commission would see only limited lakeshore items (major variances or projects that also require zone changes); others said a recurring informational report or a prompt during "matters from the board" would help keep the commission apprised of developments.
Staff also alerted the commission to an increase in scam emails targeting applicants. Planner Lauren McDonald said scammers are contacting applicants using published agenda contact information and requesting money, that names such as "Whitney" and "Wendy" have been used by fraudsters, and urged anyone contacted to stop, report the request to city staff and police, and rely on staff for secure payment instructions.
