Fluvanna supervisors weigh federal Safe Streets grant; Dixie/US‑5 intersection flagged as high priority

County staff briefed the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors on May 6 about the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program and candidate projects from the county’s Move Safely plan. The program requires a 20% local match for capital projects; eligible projects include major intersection work, roundabouts, turn lanes and systemic edge‑line treatments.

Board members said the scale of some projects makes the match significant for the county. One consultant ballparked the Dixie/US‑5 roundabout at about $5 million—meaning a county share in the neighborhood of $1 million if the county wanted to provide the 20% match. Supervisors asked staff for a clearer matrix showing likely project costs, the probability VDOT would pick up full funding in the future, crash and fatality data, and the timeline and likelihood of grant success.

Some supervisors argued that if a project is unlikely to be funded by VDOT in a reasonable time and addresses a locally persistent safety problem, it may justify a county match. Others cautioned about committing scarce capital without clearer cost estimates and project prioritization.

The board did not commit county matching funds at the meeting but directed staff to return with cost estimates, safety metrics and a prioritization matrix in time to consider the grant application window.
