Carmel-by-the-Sea to expand parking enforcement with hires and license-plate readers

Carmel-by-the-Sea plans to expand parking enforcement with new hires and upgraded technology, Chief Todd Trayer said Friday.

"We've had wonderful people apply for the job, and we're looking to hire two full-time and one part-time" parking compliance positions, Chief Todd Trayer said. The chief said the city will combine parking compliance and animal-control duties for those positions so the service is preserved.

Chief Trayer said the city will rely on improved technology to support the team. "We're going straight LPR, which is license plate reading technology," he said, adding that three scooters and IT support will be used to increase efficiency and coverage. He praised Daniel in IT for helping implement the system.

Marissa and staff said hiring and new equipment are a response to community concerns that the city had not been enforcing parking consistently, and that the goal is a more robust, regular enforcement program.

What to expect: staff will interview applicants and conduct tests; the new hires will be trained so parking enforcement and animal-control services continue. No timeline for full deployment was given in the briefing.
