Williamson County presenter outlines roughly $20.1M budget gap, staffing and cuts

County budget presenters said the proposed budget currently shows an approximate $20.1 million gap and outlined steps taken to close it, including proposed pay adjustments and operational cuts.

The presenter said the county has included the recommendation to fund a proposed 4% pay raise for county staff at an estimated cost of about $12.5 million. Budget work reduced roughly $11 million from last year's operational budget and cut more than $5 million in positions; after mandatory increases, the presenter said the net operational budget reflects about a $2 million reduction.

The presenter told the meeting the budget was briefed to Phoebe Riley, the HR director, the chief of staff and the mayor, and that the county met a 5% decrease requested by the budget committee. The presenter also announced the budget committee will begin hearings at the end of March and continue through April to review departmental requests; staff said they do not have requests for new personnel at this time.
