Johnson County Public Works outlines plan for 10,000‑gallon fuel tank pad

Coy Reynolds, a member of the Johnson County Public Works bridge crew, described plans to pour a concrete pad to hold a 10,000‑gallon fuel tank that will refuel the county's buses, snow‑plow equipment and road‑maintenance fleet.

Reynolds told the meeting that the project began as an in‑ground tank but "it wasn't big enough for what we need, so we're going to be pouring a pad to fit a 10,000 gallon fuel tank." He said the crew formed a 62‑by‑16 structure, built the tank cage in the county shop and lifted it into place.

The pad will use a double‑mat reinforcement of No. 5 rebar on 8‑inch centers, Reynolds said, and include poured tank bollards aligned with the floor, built similarly to a bridge deck pour. "Every piece of equipment that we use to maintain the roads and bridges in Johnson County will be fueled up here," he said, noting the county's six‑person bridge crew performs bridge maintenance countywide.

Reynolds described the work as in‑house construction: the bridge crew fabricated the cage and managed placement rather than outsourcing that step. He said the pad replaces the previous, undersized in‑ground tank and will centralize fueling for county maintenance and public‑transport vehicles.
