The Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners on May 13 adopted a proclamation declaring May 19, 2026, as Benjamin Franklin Baker Day in recognition of Baker’s bravery during the Spanish–American War and his status as Cape Cod's only Medal of Honor recipient.
A local organizer recounted Baker’s actions in the May 11, 1898 cable‑cutting operation off Cienfuegos, Cuba, which participants said involved heavy fire and perilous conditions. "Despite all that… they succeeded," the speaker said, summarizing the historical citation for Baker’s medal.
Organizers — including Joyce Burstead and Robert Poskett — told the commission they will hold a public celebration on May 30 at 1 p.m. at the West Dennis Schoolhouse Maritime Museum (67 School Street). The event will include a color guard, school displays and remarks; organizers said they are still seeking descendants of Baker and his shipmates to attend and will display Baker's restored medal and other artifacts at the museum.
Commissioners read and signed the proclamation during the meeting and presented organizers with an official copy and a photograph opportunity.
