The program committee reviewed a draft new-school-board-member handbook intended to help incoming trustees navigate board responsibilities and resources.
A committee member said the stepwise format would have been useful when they first joined the board and recommended assigning a mentor to new members. “This is what you need to do to prepare,” the member said, praising the document’s checklist approach.
Participants noted inclusion of onboarding steps (first 30 and first 90 days) and referenced external training (CSA/WASB) as recommended development for new trustees. One participant said they had added a specific onboarding-with-a-mentor recommendation after hearing an idea at a conference.
The chair said the handbook will remain a living Google document and that she will share it with an absent member for review upon their return. The committee agreed the handbook can evolve with suggestions and that a board appointee will be assigned later; no formal adoption vote occurred at the meeting.
The committee adjourned at 6:51 p.m.
