Nanette, a Medicare-certified advisor, told attendees at the Beaufort County Parks and Recreation Senior Day that she provides free consultations to help people turning 65 and other seniors understand Medicare and enroll in supplemental plans.
"Knowledge is power," Nanette said, describing her goal of helping residents weigh options and choose coverage that fits their medical providers and prescription needs. She said she spends time reviewing plan formularies and doctor networks so clients make informed choices.
Nanette explained the difference between Medicare and Medicaid, saying Medicaid serves low-income individuals who qualify for state assistance while Medicare is the federal program for people turning 65. She highlighted prescription coverage as a common source of confusion, noting that Part D drug plans can change coverage from year to year.
"October 15th through December 7th is the annual enrollment period where they can make changes to those Part D selections," Nanette said, advising seniors to review their plans each year. She said she helps clients compare options and complete enrollments during that period.
Nanette said she does not charge clients for consultations. "I do not charge for that consultation," she said, and added that she contracts with major insurance companies that pay commissions after enrollment.
When asked how she became involved, Nanette said she has worked in the insurance industry since about 2015 and, after moving to the area roughly four years ago, focused increasingly on Medicare because of local demand. The Reporter closed the segment by thanking her for assisting seniors at the event.
The segment was recorded as part of the Beaufort County report at the Parks and Recreation Senior Day event.
