Residents urge repairs, better water and wood‑chip mulch for community garden

Public commenters at the start of Wednesday’s meeting urged the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission to address tangible maintenance problems at neighborhood parks and the city community garden.

Eric Marquez told the commission that Harrison Canyon Park is “missing three picnic benches and two swings,” and said attempts to contact Public Works were frustrated by a full voicemail. He asked the commission to review parks ordinances and make city guidance easier to find for residents.

Scott Olsen, who identified himself as a lifetime resident, urged immediate attention to water pressure at the community garden, road/drive maintenance and greater use of locally produced wood‑chip mulch from city tree removals. “The number one most important issue is the water pressure,” Olsen said, adding that access to mulch would help with weed control and reduce dump costs.

Vanessa, Parks and Recreation staff, acknowledged the garden’s age and utility‑ownership constraints and said staff will include garden assessments as part of master plan implementation and seek grant or operational funding where appropriate. She said some repairs (for example, a gate or local vandalism) have been addressed and that long‑term fixes will be sequenced by priority and funding availability.

The commission did not take formal action on the garden at this meeting but several commissioners and staff encouraged site visits and follow‑up reporting at a future meeting.
