The Colonial Heights School Board approved a pilot partnership with Girls on the Run to operate a third–fifth grade team at Lake View Elementary, beginning fall 2024.
Craig Scite of the recreation department described the pilot structure: two sessions (fall and spring), two weekly meetings of about 75–90 minutes for 10 weeks, and an end-of-season 5K at Bryan Park in Richmond. The pilot will start with a single team of 15 students, with two coaches required per team. The GU Club of Colonial Heights (as recorded in the meeting) agreed to cover the program fee for the initial 15 participants.
Ally Reynolds of Girls on the Run said the program is "100% adaptable," noting that the curriculum accommodates non-verbal participants and students who use wheelchairs and emphasizes meaningful movement rather than competitive running.
Board members asked about enrollment selection and adaptive accommodations; Reynolds described options including first-come registration, counselor invitations, or a lottery with staff oversight to ensure team composition and safety. Staff said two adults are required for every 15 participants per the organization's policy.
The board approved the program by roll/voice vote.
The pilot is intended to expand to other elementary schools and potentially the middle school if successful.
