At its meeting the Colonial Heights School Board approved several routine but substantive items bundled under new business.
The board approved the special education annual plan describing how federal special education funds will be used, primarily to fund positions; administrators noted that any new positions funded by federal dollars require a federal justification, while some recent additions were covered with local funds.
The board approved a new interpreter/translator job description as part of the 2024–25 staffing plan; the position will provide translation and interpreting for IEP meetings, parent meetings and document translation. Members discussed whether automated call-system translations cover the district’s needs and were told the new position would provide more reliable, human interpretation when parents require assistance.
Administrators also presented a follow-up dual-enrollment agreement spelling out responsibilities for providing an associates-degree pathway and approved it as presented. The board approved a new elementary leadership team job description to replace historic single lead-teacher roles, giving principals discretion to identify leadership needs and the number of team members by school size.
The board approved a policy revision to expand the term 'teacher' to 'employees' where appropriate so that certain professional-staff rules apply districtwide.
Each item passed by voice vote as recorded in the meeting packet.
