Senior’s service project brings adaptive swings to district playgrounds; board applauds student leadership

High school senior Hannah Mitchell addressed the board about her senior service project to bring ADA-adaptable swings to Colonial Heights playgrounds so students with disabilities can participate in recess activities.

Mitchell cited research about playground exclusion and said adaptable swings, which include three-point harnesses and back support, "are very beneficial for all kids of all ages" and make playground time more inclusive and supportive for students who might become overstimulated by traditional swings.

The board and audience applauded; staff thanked Mitchell and presented a small gift in recognition of her research and advocacy.

The superintendent and principals later referenced the project as an example of student leadership tied to other service-learning activities in the district.
