The Harrison County Board of Education approved recommendations March 3 to purchase school buses and to award two district contracts, while a trustee recused himself from votes tied to personal conflicts.
The board voted to proceed with the bus purchase recommendation presented by district staff, including brand- and model-specific limits discussed during the meeting and a $35,000 allowance for preparation of certain buses. Trustees moved and seconded the recommendation and the motion carried.
Board members also approved a contract to Evergreen Lawn Care for grass mowing and trimming work not to exceed $220,270 covering multiple schools, and later approved a $70,400 contract to Spruce Creek Enterprises for sustainable-properties work and reporting. Trustee Mr. Hook announced a recusal from items tied to a separate upcoming contract before the Evergreen vote and was recorded as recused for the Evergreen item.
During discussion trustees asked staff to clarify bid-line allocations and which schools each vendor would serve. A board member also asked whether insurance could cover a bus purchase or related expenses; staff replied that insurance and subrogation complexities exist and that they would follow up with more detail.
The board’s approvals were procedural: motions were made, seconded and the votes carried as recorded by the board secretary. No dissenting roll-call tallies were given in the public record for these items.
What’s next: staff said they will finalize contract documents and provide any follow-up clarifications about bid line items and insurance options at a subsequent meeting.
