West Anchorage High School held its graduation ceremony for the class of 2026, featuring student reflections, school leadership remarks and formal presentation by the Anchorage School District. Principal Jay Dorris opened the ceremony with a moment of silence for classmates who could not attend and urged graduates to "show up" for their goals and communities.
Students spoke throughout the program: Bryson Beckman and Carlos Menendez (a West High communications intern) introduced graduates and asked about post‑graduation plans; Menendez said he will attend the Colorado School of Mines to study electrical engineering. Graduating senior Rayshawn said he plans to spend time in Alaska before attending the University of Michigan.
The program included a land acknowledgment delivered by senior Monica Karak recognizing the Dena'ina people and thanking indigenous stewards of the land. Principal Dorris introduced the valedictorian, Alex Nemeth, who reflected on West High traditions and extracurriculars, and the senior class speaker, Mint Ong, who urged classmates to carry lessons from challenges into the future. Faculty speaker Ms. Hernandez shared an immigrant experience, emphasized kindness, presence and determination, and noted she is stepping back after a 29‑year career.
Student body president Gemma McGrew spoke about class camaraderie and school pride and thanked staff, including student government teacher Mr. Symansky. The choir performed the alma mater, and district representatives reviewed students' records and formally presented the class of 2026 on behalf of the Anchorage School District. Principal Dorris closed the ceremony by instructing graduates to move their tassels and congratulating the West High class of 2026; graduates were directed to exit as the ceremony concluded.
