POB board to decide soon whether to use spring recess days as make‑ups after snowstorms

The Plainview‑Old Bethpage Central School District is reviewing options to make up several recent snow days and expects to update the community within a week.

Superintendent Dr. Romera told the board on March 9 that New York State Education Department granted a waiver that lets the district count hours for the Feb. 23 snow day toward the state instructional requirement, but that the waiver “does not automatically resolve all other legal, including contractual obligations and requirements related to the school calendar.” The district is consulting legal counsel and central administration to determine the appropriate course of action.

Under the current 2025–26 calendar the district already planned to be in session on Wednesday, May 27 (the Wednesday after Memorial Day) to cover a Jan. 26 snow day. The most recent storm produced two additional snow days (Feb. 23–24); those are currently scheduled to be made up on the final two days of spring recess, Thursday, April 9, and Friday, April 10.

Dr. Romera flagged community concerns including attendance, supervision and instructional impact if the district uses April recess days and said the district will weigh those operational issues alongside legal and contractual constraints. She said the goal is to provide a decision as soon as possible and earlier than a week if feasible.

The board’s public materials and budget outreach pages will be updated as decisions are made, and the administration said any proposed calendar changes will be publicly discussed and placed on a future meeting agenda for consideration.
