Parent urges district AI policy and consistent assignment posting after student received zero using detection tool

During public comment, Krista Stoume, a BSD parent and former district teacher who said she now runs an AI awareness project, urged the board to adopt a clear district AI policy and improve consistency in how assignments are posted.

Stoume said her son spent five hours on an assignment that was given a zero after a teacher ran the work through AI‑detection software and reported it as "69% was AI generated." She named tools she said were used and questioned their reliability.

"Tools used like ZeroGPT and Turnitin are widely known to be unreliable and prone to false positives," Stoume said, adding that the Delaware Department of Education has advised "both verbally and in writing against relying on these tools due to their inaccuracy."

She asked the board to adopt clear guidance limiting reliance on unapproved detection tools, provide professional learning for staff and ensure assignments are posted consistently across platforms such as Schoology and Infinite Campus so students and families can find work.

Board members later noted the policy review committee will meet this week and that district staff have drafts of AI policy language that might be used as a starting point; the policy review committee chair said the committee will consider whether teachers should use unapproved tools to evaluate student work.
