Finance members debate cutting $1,000 tobacco retail license fee to $250–$300

Members of the Finance committee discussed a proposed change to the retail tobacco license fee, currently set at $1,000, and several said they would support lowering the fee to a figure in the $250–$300 range.

Vice Chair Senator Brockton asked for more time and testimony on the issue, particularly around event licenses and the appropriate fee level. Several members said the current $1,000 fee faces substantial pushback and that a more moderate fee would be appropriate; suggested alternatives cited in the discussion ranged from about $250 to $300.

Members said the bill will return for fuller discussion next week and indicated staff and the pro tem’s office will circulate the bill text in advance. No formal vote or motion occurred during the session.
