Christine Millerberg, appointed by a unanimous board vote to represent District 1, was sworn in March 26 as a member of the Canyons School District Board of Education.
The ceremony, held at the district office at 9361 South 300 East in Sandy, included the administration of the oath of office. After reciting the oath to support the U.S. and Utah constitutions and pledging to discharge the duties of the office with fidelity, Millerberg was congratulated by the presiding official.
Millerberg, who will complete the term of her late husband, Mont L. Millerberg, told the room she has spent 33 years in the classroom and has been active as a parent and community supporter. "I have committed my life to education," Millerberg said, stressing that teaching "truly can change lives." She said those experiences shaped her decision to accept the appointment and pledged to work collaboratively with board members and the community.
Millerberg said she intended to seek input from students, parents, staff and patrons before making decisions. "I recognize the importance of understanding the stakeholders' needs before making decisions," she said, adding that she was motivated by her grandchildren and a belief in education as "the work of hope."
The chair noted the board had appointed Millerberg unanimously and described the office as a solemn responsibility. Millerberg also shared a personal note that her family welcomed a new grandchild, Jade, the day before.
Following the brief remarks and presentation of official documents, the board moved into a closed session to continue other business. No additional votes or agenda actions were recorded in the public portion of the meeting.
