The Canyons Board of Education appointed Christine Millerberg to fill the District 1 vacancy at a special meeting on March 19, 2024, after interviewing a slate of applicants.
Board members opened the meeting by explaining that the appointment would fill the remainder of a term that ends Dec. 31, 2024, following the recent passing of the seat’s prior holder. The board described a uniform interview process: each applicant received the same six questions and up to 15 minutes to respond before the board held follow-up rounds for finalists.
The board conducted individual interviews with more than a dozen applicants. Candidates who spoke during the meeting described a range of backgrounds: parents and PTA leaders who emphasized family engagement and early literacy; educators and school volunteers who highlighted classroom experience, equity work and special-education services; recent graduates and community leaders who pressed for stronger teacher pay, staff support and greater outreach to families experiencing homelessness and language access needs.
Christine Millerberg, one of the finalists the board brought back for tiebreaker questions, described decades-long residency and experience working with students with disabilities, and said the district must ensure every child can access services. "No child should be left behind," she told the board during the finalist round.
After preliminary tallies and a finalist round of tiebreaker questions, a board member moved to appoint Millerberg and a second was given. The board then voted on the formal motion to appoint Christine Millerberg to the District 1 seat; the motion carried and the meeting concluded. The board said the new member will take the oath at the next regular meeting on March 26.
The process used a two-stage approach: an initial interview round in which each board member asked one of the prepared questions, and a second round that returned candidates who received sufficient support for additional questions. Board members repeatedly described the applicant pool as strong and thanked all who applied. The board reminded the public that there was no scheduled patron comment for this special meeting but provided an email contact for those wishing to submit input.
Outcome and next steps: the board formally appointed Christine Millerberg to represent District 1 for the remainder of the term through Dec. 31, 2024; the oath of office is scheduled for the board’s March 26 meeting. Any recorded motion language and vote tallies appear in the board’s official minutes.
